- Start seeds indoors in wintertime. Gently press scattered seeds into seed starting mix and set in direct sunlight. Once seedlings form their first true leaves, gradually harden off (3-4 weeks) and transplant in shade or partial shade after last frost. Direct sow in protected garden area after spring frosts. Keep evenly moist. Transplant seedlings to permanent garden home once sturdy.
