Cherokee Trail of Tears Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)

This historic heirloom pole bean was carried from Georgia to Oklahoma by members of the Cherokee Nation who were banished from their homelands by the U.S. government in the late 1830s. A sleek black bean when dried, Cherokee Trail of Tears can also be eaten fresh.

  • 20 seeds minimum
  • Germination: 7-10 days
  • Maturity: 85 days
  • Direct sow 1-1 ½” deep in full sun after danger of frost has passed. Beans need soil temperatures between 75-85° F to sprout. Support is required.
  • Space plants 3-6” apart; space rows 2-3’ apart
