Brown Mustard (Brassica juncea)
One of the most popular spices, brown mustard can be easily grown in the home garden. This is the spicy variety used in Dijon and some Indian mustards. It has a full, robust flavor. The tall plants have spikes of dainty yellow flowers. Harvest pods when full, but before they split open or drop off. Air dry until brown and brittle, then thresh. The tender young greens add a savory bite to summer salads. As a cover crop, brown mustard will suppress damaging soil borne pathogens while adding a hefty does of green biomass to your garden beds.
